New Arrivals
After an extended stage one labour that would not progress, we took Stevie in to be assessed by a veterinarian, and together decided to proceed with a c-section. This was a first for us, but the priority was to see everyone arrive safely.
All 8 puppies arrived healthy, thriving, and chunky. Stevie is recovering well and is taking exceptional care of her babies. She loves being a mom.
Thank you so much to the Camrose Veterinary Hospital for the wonderful care, and for slipping us in on a Saturday.

Week 1
After watching Stevie in stage 1 labour for so long (determined to catch that first contraction that starts stage 2), and then being up so much with neonate puppies, I don't think I've ever been so sleep deprived in my life. I was responding to an email at one point and was struggling to spell Flat-Coat. Sheesh, time to get some sleep.
The puppies are nursing, sleeping, and growing. They are now double their birth weights. While their ears and eyes are still closed, we've been doing Avidog's Early Neurological Stimulation as well as Scent Introduction in order to give them extra stimulation while their senses are reduced. We do this from days 3-16.
Puppies have had their nails trimmed twice this week, and I will continue to do this every 3 days. I'm definitely feeling like I could use some reading glasses to help me with the task soon...
Week 2
My apologies for the late update this weekend!
Stevie has spent her time caring for the puppies and has been enjoying some breaks outside of the whelping box. In her spare time she likes to head outside to dig a den for her puppies. We've had to supervise her closely as she gets herself good and muddy in the process. Stevie has started to sit to feed them on occasion. It's more difficult for them to nurse this way, but is an important developmental challenge.
The puppies are starting to toddle around up on their feet a bit now. Their eyes have opened, and they are making all kinds of adorable puppy sounds. They are beginning to really enjoy human interactions and will give us tiny kisses on the cheek when we cuddle them, and enjoy mouthing at our hands and nibbling on our fingers.
